skd224530sdcExposure to radio frequency radiation from cordless phones raised heart rate in almost half the subjects in a new study.

These digital phones emit extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs)—even when they’re not in use. Much like antennas, cell phones, tube fluorescent lights, and WiFi, cordless phones contribute to electrosmog that’s linked to arrhythmia, heart palpitations, and rapid heartbeat.

This new double-blind study just published in the European Journal of Oncology also reports other autonomic nervous system problems including anxiety, blood pressure changes, dizziness, fatigue, fainting spells, nausea, panic attacks, profuse sweating, and sleep disturbances—all signs of electrosensitivity—from exposure to these phones.

Electrosensitive individuals and those who live near antennas often complain of cardiovascular problems (arrhythmia, changes in blood pressure, chest pain, and rapid heartbeat). No wonder a number of health professionals report “a dramatic rise in severe and chronic disease” that includes “extreme fluctuations in blood pressure, even harder to influence with medications; heart rhythm disorders; heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population.”

Fortunately, new research also suggests that Earthing (or grounding)—a natural technique that absorbs or dissipates electrical charges by connecting to the Earth—individuals can normalize heart rate and other electrophysiological responses. A recent double-blind study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine shows that just four 10-minute grounding periods can improve cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system responses in healthy adults.

A 2005 investigation in European Biology and Bioelectronics measured Earthing on the human body—and found it reduced the immediate environmental electrical potential by a factor of at least 70. No wonder that reconnecting to the Earth shields us against harmful EMFs.

Dr. Ann Louise’s Take:

Cable and electrical wiring coming into your home is grounded, and now research shows humans may need it too! My new book Zapped highlights some of the many benefits of Earthing’s grounding techniques, as well as true stories about young, formerly healthy people struck down by electropollution.

Take, for example, Step Sinatra, the entrepreneurial son of my colleague, integrative cardiologist Stephen Sinatra, MD, who has conducted some of the research on Earthing. Here’s Step’s story:

“In the late 1990s, I was trading stocks on Wall Street, on a floor with 100 guys surrounded by a battery of computers, phones, and electronics. I got my first cell phone in 1997 and another one a year later. I used them all the time.”

“I didn’t know it at the time, but I was being bombarded 24/7 by EMFs,” he says. “For the four years I worked on Wall Street I didn’t sleep much.” Slowly Step began to realize that something was affecting his health. “I developed ear, eye, and nose problems, a chronic cough, and major congestion.” Even when his symptoms worsened, “I felt I would get healthy later. I was making serious money and living an ego-driven, high-stress lifestyle.”

Not until he developed chest pains that resembled an early warning of a heart attack or coronary artery spasm—at the age of 25—did Step quit his job. But his subsequent plan of action wasn’t much better in terms of electrosmog. He filled his small trading office out West with “wireless networks and cordless phones, not knowing the harm they were causing me. I worked and slept there, so I was getting hit with EMFs day and night.”

“I was getting worse, with weight loss, weakness, severe bloating and gas, inability to digest certain foods, muscle pains/injuries, sleep issues, and food allergies.” But nothing seemed to help. “My father had me see some of the best doctors in the country,” he adds. “Nobody could figure it out. I spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and read almost every book I could get my hands on, and still I got worse.”

Step reached rock bottom when he was hospitalized—”surrounded by a lot of electromagnetic monitoring devices and equipment”—for 40 days. “I was in excruciating pain,” and “if somebody brought a laptop to show me pictures, I couldn’t look at it for more than a minute.”

Miraculously, he began to improve and eventually became strong enough to leave the hospital. “I was still super fragile, though. My father talked to me around this time about Earthing, even just sitting with my bare feet on the grass. As the weather warmed up, I started sitting, standing, and walking barefoot a bit. I noticed my strength coming back slowly.”

Reconnecting to the Earth
Step also began using Earthing technology while sleeping. “I felt such a dramatic boost in energy and health that I have not slept ungrounded since.”

“When I travel, I take my grounding sheet with me,” he says. Earthing Fitted Sheets fit much like any regular bottom fitted sheet. Made from white 240-thread count 50/50 poly cotton fabric woven with conductive silver fibers, these sheets connect to the Earth with a ground cord. A more cost-effective, portable option may be the Earthing Bed Pad, a half sheet that tucks around the bottom half of a regular fitted sheet.

Just be sure to plug it in! Arriving late on one trip, Step used his sheet but slept poorly, before realizing “the next morning that I had forgotten to connect it. That was a big confirmation for me that Earthing was very effective and instrumental in my healing.” It is, in fact, one of the safest and most natural things anyone can do.

By coupling your body to the Earth’s gentle surface energy, you can normalize your biological rhythms. No wonder that observations and research show that this grounding technique can defuse the cause of inflammation (reducing or eliminating pain), increase energy, improve sleep quality, lower stress and promote calmness, dramatically speed healing, and accelerate recovery from vigorous activity—as well as protect against health-disrupting EMFs.
