Is Your Tap Water Safe?

Why water purity matters now more than ever.

Watching the news this week, I’ve witnessed the sheer devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy all over the East Coast—my home for more than half of my life. My heart goes out to all of you in the region affected by the storm – you’ll be in my thoughts and prayers throughout the recovery process.

As a nutritionist and health advocate for the last three decades, issues of public health and safety are my greatest concern. When I see the images of rising flood waters, I can’t help but worry about the possible threat of water supply contamination.

Even in regular conditions, experts agree that we can no longer assume that our water is pollutant-free—regardless of the source. And, when disaster strikes, it’s especially critical to take precaution:  “Disruptions to water supply treatment due to power outages and flooding can lead to serious health issues,” Mary O’Dowd, New Jersey Health Commissioner, said in a statement earlier this week.

recently interviewed biochemist and water specialist Dr. Roy Speiser, who has devoted the past three decades of his career to developing water protection products. According to Dr. Speiser, “the public is being misled to believe that water is safe just because it meets government standards. Even if your local water report detects that the level of contaminants meets the government’s allowable concentration, consuming small amounts of heavy metals, chemicals and pharmaceuticals over years accumulates in our bodies and will make us sick.”

Water from a municipal water source or even private wells can be contaminated with parasites, chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, birth control pills, gasoline additives, industrial discharge, jet fuel and even radioactivity.

Chlorine is especially worrisome because while it remains the government’s preferred disinfectant of choice for dirty water, it creates secondary by-products that are toxins when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic matter. These by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs) are suspected carcinogens and can increase risks of heart, lung, kidney, and bladder damage. Recently, water suppliers have been adding ammonia to drinking water in an attempt to reduce the THMs which unfortunately results in even more toxic chemical by-products that function as hormone disruptors as well as probable carcinogens.

A topic I’ve written about for years, parasites in the water supply are also of great concern. Contamination generally either comes from animals “pooping” in the water, agricultural runoff from animal waste, or in the case of flooding; waste and sewage can seep into the source water. With so many individuals today with compromised immune systems—not to mention the elderly and developing young children who are more susceptible to infection—getting the right water filter in your own home is simply not negotiable when it comes to health and protecting your family.

For the very best health protection on the home front, I recommend point-of-use filtration, which can easily be installed on top of your sink counter by attaching the filter to your standard faucet or can be installed by a plumber under the sink and supplied with a separate dispenser. Carbonized Ceramic Countertop or Under Counter filters feature ultrafine carbonized ceramic filtration with a filtration efficiency of 0.3 microns. This is so important when you consider that crypto—the smallest of the parasites (about 3 microns to be exact)—can compress and squeeze through most carbon block filters.

Designed for long-term use with affordable replacement filters, these filters reduce 99.9% of parasites, >99.7% of chlorine, and greater than >99% of chloramines and byproducts such as THMs. Learn more about filtration efficiency here.

I was wondering if you anyone knows a good place to send water to get tested beyond our state extension office?

What about using water in the bathroom? Brushing teeth, showering, bathing etc. Can the parasites affect you with that type of water usage and if so wouldn’t a household filter be better? Please advise. Thanks!

Cher, you are absolutely right to question that. Parasites and harmful bacteria can certainly be picked up in our regular grooming activities. Whole house systems are a great solution to this problem, or one might select a shower filter, bathtub filter, and countertop filter for the bathroom.

Can we recommend adding hydrogen peroxide in the mouthwash, lemon in driking water and EPSOM salts in bath water?
Lemon to bring alkalinity to drinking water without buying the $4k alkaline water system. Hydrogen peroxide not only whitens teeth but kills germs in an infected mouth/gums/teeth/other virus.
EPSOM has magnesium for alkaline water, add tea bags and lemon too.
