“In conclusion,” the research states, “nearly the entire U.S. population consumes a diet that is not on par with recommendations. These findings add another piece to the rather disturbing picture that is emerging of a nation’s diet in crisis.”
According to the report, a “dietary quality index” was designed to reflect the “percentage of calories people derive from nutrient-rich, unprocessed plant foods on a scale of 0 to 100.” The higher the person’s score, the healthier they are believed to be and the more body fat they are predicted to lose over time. The high numbers also contributed to reduced instances of obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides.
Unfortunately, it appears that the majority of Americans can’t seem to score higher than a 10 on the scale. The SAD itself rates about 11 out of 100 – abysmal in terms of nutritional value. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates, 32 % of our calories come from animal products, 57% from processed foods, and only 11% from whole grains, legumes, fruits, veggies, and nuts. If you stacked it up on a scale of one to ten, the average American’s diet would rate about a one.
