Research following close to 5,000 adults—mostly in their 40s—finds that obesity cuts 12 years off the human lifespan. Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, this study also underscores the importance of eating your veggies and fruits, exercising regularly, moderate alcohol use, and not smoking.

While this is not exactly surprising, research in an issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology is. According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for a healthy weight, between half and two-thirds of all women in their reproductive years are obese!

How can this be? WHO guidelines use body fat to determine obesity—rather than body-mass index (BMI), a measure of whether height and weight are proportional—favored in this country.

“BMI is not ‘one size fits all,'” says Abbey Berenson, MD, director of the University of Texas Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health. “Inaccurate classification can decrease the impact of obesity prevention programs that will result in many women not receiving the help they need.”

With over 1 billion adults worldwide are obese and 10% of the world’s children are overweight or obese, safe weight loss is a critical health need now more than ever. Linked to higher blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, liver cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and numerous other chronic diseases, it’s no wonder that obesity can cut a decade off your lifespan.

Experts at the University of Michigan report that 20% of 20-somethings are now obese. That’s one of the reasons why we created Smoothie Shakedown—an easy, inexpensive weight-loss plan that’s fun to follow. Like all my Fat Flush plans, it helps shed unwanted body fat, especially belly fat so closely linked to heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

In clinical research, the Smoothie Shakedown jumpstarts weight loss in as little as 2 weeks. And many women lost up to 20 pounds in that short time! You simply enjoy a great-tasting, plant-based smoothie for two meals a day plus another healthy meal. And like any Fat Flush protocol, drink plenty of water and cran-water in between meals.

Go to the official Smoothie Shakedown website for delicious smoothie recipes using a special gluten- and dairy-free protein. Combining pea and rice for a complete source of essential amino acids, Fat Flush Body Protein has one of the highest Protein Efficiency ratings available. This means you’ll feel full and energized for a good 4 hours—without cravings or blood sugar highs and subsequent lows.

I have a few questions about the shakedown smoothie. Once the two weeks is over and a normal diet resumes, won’t the weight return? Also, I have heard that too much whey protein is not good for a person’s kidneys. I have had smoothies for breakfast and notice my lower back hurts. Once I stop drinking the smoothies (with whey protein), the backache goes away. That tells me my kidneys are sensitive to the whey protein. can you address these 2 issues?

      Hi Nancy,
After the two weeks, it is recommended that a person who hasn’t yet met their weight loss goal follow Phase 2 of the Fat Flush Plan. If you did indeed meet your goal during the Shakedown, then Phase 3 of the Fat Flush Plan would be recommended as a lifestyle maintenance plan.
In regards to the whey protein, I don’t believe that the issue would be too much protein. I would thoroughly look over the nutrition facts for the protein powder that you are using and rule out any toxic ingredients like aspartame, sucralose, maltodextrin, MSG, soy, gluten, corn, or dairy. The Fat Flush Body Protein is an extremely clean product that is free of all the toxins I mentioned, and it’s the recommended protein supplement for someone doing the Smoothie Shakedown.

Nancy, there is no whey in the Smoothie Shakedown protein I use. I cannot tolerate whey. The original with yellow pea and brown rice protein is tasty and filling. I have a smoothie made with cherries almost every morning for breakfast.

Nancy – I used the smoothie shakedown for 2 weeks and lost 16 pounds. After the two weeks, I switched over to the guidelines in Anne Louise’s book “your body knows best” and have continued to lose, only at a slower rate. I’m down 30lbs total and it has been so easy. I think you would only gain if return to the type of eating that helped you put on the weight in the first place.
    Good luck!

I cannot drink those smoothie shakes – the stevia makes me gag and feel like I am going to throw up. I cannot tolerate that taste and have given up on your shakes. I hope Dr you will come up with an alternative sweetener for your shakes.

Hi Mary, I’m pleased to say the UNI KEY is working on a re-formulation of our protein powders that will use a different sweetener, monk fruit. It has been taste tested and approved, so it shouldn’t be long now before it is available!

Why does it need any sweetener?? I prefer to just add my own sweetener (or none) when I make my shake. I agree w/Mary, these are so sweet that I cannot drink them.

I like adding veggies to my smoothie, so that really cuts down on the sweetness 🙂

I did the smoothie shakedown protocol for two weeks and actually gained weight. I think all the fructose with the fruit that goes into the smoothie is not good for me as I was usually hungry 2-3 hours after the shakes (I was hoping to get 4-5 hours of satiety.) I was very careful with portions and my third meal was from the Dr’s fat flush cookbook – only phase 1 recipes. No snacking, plenty of water/cranwater, and a daily 45 minute brisk walk. I also gain weight when I eat any type of bread or pasta (GF) – four servings of bread in a week equal weight gain for me regardless of my activity level. My mom says we are “easy keepers.” LOL The vanilla flavor of the powder is not conducive green smoothies – kale, chards, or other veggie based smoothies. I don’t want to die 10 years too soon! Now, I am reading Dr. Mercola’s Optimized Nutrition Plan which includes nutritional typing and short, high-intensity exercise. I don’t eat wheat, potatoes, dairy, corn, soy, peanut butter, and cook with liquids, not oils. Mostly whole organic foods, very little from cans and boxes.
