Fat flushing with grapefruit.

Grapefruit is a super food when it comes to weight loss.

Once regarded as the star of the legendary Grapefruit Diet, it turns out that there may be some science behind the grapefruit/weight loss connection after all. And that’s beyond grapefruits’ nutritional perks that include its offerings of a low calorie source of vitamin C, a decent amount of potassium, and phytosterols that help to balance cholesterol levels.

If you’re a pink grapefruit lover, there is even better news.

The red or pink varieties contain infection-fighting vitamin A, beta carotene and lycopene, a top of the line carotenoid that has been linked with a decreased risk of prostate as well as other types of cancer.

Grapefruit has been one of my favorite fat flushing fruits for years. It is the star-player in my fruit flush Smoothie Shakedown. This program has enabled dieters to lose up to 20 lbs in 2 weeks. Maybe some of their terrific results have to do with grapefruit’s slimming effects because the Citrus Surprise smoothie has been a real favorite. In fact, grapefruit becomes absolutely irresistible when paired with orange— another citrus super-fruit — and a little spice. Check out the recipe here.

The only caveat with grapefruit is that many doctors recommend that you don’t drink grapefruit juice if on medications. There are certain compounds found in the grapefruit that interfere with the metabolism of drugs in the system and cause the medicine to stay in your bloodstream longer. So, if you are taking cholesterol-lowering statins, epilepsy drugs, blood pressure meds, calcium channel blockers, or even something for allergies like the over-the-counter anti-histamine Allegra, it’s best not to mix your meds with grapefruit juice.
