Get the lowdown on produce codes.

Eat clean. Eat organic. Avoid genetically modified foods. These are the “new rules of health” championed for years by the Fat Flush Plan.

How can you tell what is healthy food-wise?

A little-known secret is that produce is labeled with a coded sticker that tells you not only if it is organic versus conventionally grown, but if it is genetically modified (GM). The trick is to look at the number on the tiny labels. A four-digit code tells you the produce is conventionally grown. A five-digit code that begins with a 9 tells you it is organic. And last but certainly not least, a five-digit code that starts with an 8 tells you it is, in fact, genetically modified. So, in this case, 8 is not great.

Whether you are on a budget and need to prioritize your organic purchases, or you would simply like to know which type of produce has the highest pesticide residues—and which do not—the following guide from the Environmental Working Group will help.

12 Most Contaminated (Consider Buying These Organic)
• Strawberries
• Apples
• Nectarines
• Peaches
• Celery
• Grapes
• Cherries
• Spinach
• Tomatoes
• Sweet bell peppers
• Cherry tomatoes
• Cucumbers

15 Least Contaminated (Not Mandatory to Buy Organic)
• Avocados
• Sweet Corn*
• Pineapples
• Cabbage
• Sweet peas frozen
• Onions
• Asparagus
• Mangos
• Papayas*
• Kiwi
• Eggplant
• Honeydew Melon
• Grapefruit
• Cantaloupe
• Cauliflower

* A small amount of sweet corn, papaya and summer squash sold in the United States is produced from GE seed stock. Buy organic varieties of these crops if you want to avoid GE produce.

Are these produce codes international? We live in Canada…sickening how GMOs allowed here and not in Europe. They won’t buy our beef because of what’s added to it.

DebV, the produce codes are also used in other countries.
