Is My Cholesterol Level Bad?

My doctor recently informed me that my cholesterol has hit 220 and advised me to give up eggs and cheese-my favorites! Is there an alternative?

I don’t think you need to forgo your favorites just yet since your cholesterol levels are in the healthy range of 200 to 220. Also, limiting cholesterol intake can backfire since this fatty substance is used to synthesize vitamin D from the sun, manufacture sex hormones and produce fat-digesting bile. Another reason not to be overly concerned about cholesterol: Studies suggest that levels of blood fats called triglycerides are a better predictor of heart problems. That’s why I tell clients to curb their intake of trans fats and sugar, which have been shown to raise triglyceride levels. I also advise taking a daily 1 gram supplement of mercury-free fish oil or eating four servings of omega 3-rich foods (like fish and walnuts) a week. Research shows omega-3s increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol and decrease triglyceride levels-key factors in protecting the heart.
