We’ve all heard about the amazing health benefits of green juices, but why is everyone suddenly hopping on the celery juice bandwagon – is it really that good for you?
There’s no question that celery juice is the latest trend taking the nutrition world by storm. I did a quick search on Instagram today and found 122,000 posts on celery juice, on the accounts of health gurus like Kris Carr and Anthony William, and celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow and Pharrell.
In my 4 decades of experience in this field, I have seen a lot of trends like this come and go – some are like the one-hit wonders of the music world and disappear as quick as they came, while others are backed by solid science and stand the test of time. Celery juice has been an integral part of health tonics for almost a century now, but this is the first time it’s taking the spotlight, and there’s promising research that when it comes to health and weight loss, it belongs in the limelight.
5 Health and Weight Loss Benefits of Celery Juice
Most of us have tried munching on celery sticks as a healthy alternative to those crunchy, salty fried foods we love to snack on. While those good-for-you green stalks may help stave off cravings, it turns out the juice packs more of a healthy weight loss punch. Celery juice is packed with antioxidants and is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and folate, and full of electrolytes like potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, and manganese. All of these nutrients come together to cleanse and hydrate you, reduce inflammation, promote healthy digestion, and boost your metabolism in 5 main ways.
- Say Bye-Bye to Belly Bloat and Water Weight. Thanks to celery juice’s high potassium and sodium content, it’s a natural diuretic that also hydrates you. It’s also anti-inflammatory and detoxifying, so putting all that together means it flushes excess fluids and bloating from your body, to slim your stomach and cleanse your kidneys all at once! But it doesn’t stop there – celery juice also helps you produce optimal levels of stomach acid, so your food is broken down for proper digestion, eliminating another cause of belly bloat.
- It Feeds Your Fat-Burning Microbes. When I was writing Radical Metabolism, I discovered one of the potent antioxidants found in celery juice – a bioflavonoid called apigenin – feeds the healthy bacteria in your microbiome known to help you lose weight. This little antioxidant marvel is not only a powerful weight loss ally, but is anti-inflammatory and boasts anti-tumor properties as well. This flavonoid is best consumed as juice, where the fiber can’t interfere with any of its health-promoting and slim-stimulating actions.
- It Lowers Blood Sugar, Blood Lipids, and Blood Pressure. When blood sugar is running high, insulin is too, and this makes weight loss a challenge – especially for diabetics. Once your sugars are up, it isn’t long before cholesterol and blood pressure are on the rise, too. Studies show that celery juice brings blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids (circulating cholesterol) back to normal within 2 months.
- Celery Juice Cleanses the Colon. When your digestion isn’t working properly, inflammation sets in and it’s easy to pack on the pounds. Unhealthy digestion also sets the stage for pathogens and parasites to take up residence, making the problem even worse. Celery juice has antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiviral properties, and feeds the healthy bacteria that also fight these “bad bugs.” Once it normalizes stomach acid levels, it also helps purge the food debris from the small intestine that wasn’t being digested properly, eliminating the favorite food sources for the unwanted hidden hitchhikers that make you fat, sick, and tired.
- Your Liver Loves Celery Juice. If you’ve read my Radical Metabolism plan, then you know how essential liver health is to your overall health and weight loss. Celery juice helps you build better bile, which is crucial for your fat metabolism. It not only promotes bile production, but helps flush out the thick, sluggish bile that slows your detox and your weight loss. Because it gets your digestion running smoothly, your liver can flush toxins into your intestines for quick and easy elimination, which means better, healthier, and faster weight loss for you.

Thanks a lot for this juice recipes. And also detailed information on Weight Loss Benefits of Celery Juice,
This will definitely be very helpful and I will definitely give you feedback as I use it.
Thanks a million for these recipes.
I’ve been doing this juice with kale I will have to try the jicama
Can’t wait to try the celery juice! Thanks for your clear explanation of the benefits.
Just wondering if there might be a substitute for jicama in this recipe? We don’t see it on our shelves where I live.
A crisp green apple is a great substitute!
There is already a green apple in the recipe
Try daikon or any other kind of radish
The medical medium suggests drinking it first thing in the morning for these benefits
Is that what you recommend
Yes – this is a wise choice. First thing in the morning and I also recommend it in the afternoon as part of my 4-Day Radical Cleanse. I have been recommending it for over 30 years! 🙂
Medical Medium also says adding other ingredients lowers the benefits of celery juice. He also gives certain time around drinking it without drinking or eating anything else especially if not drank first of the day.
While I appreciate the passion, care and with which Medical Medium brings forth information and assists in aiding others in wellness, he is not a trained dietician or a trained nutritionist. Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman is clinically trained and educated in nutrition. I will defer to her recommendations as final. She has a reason for why she includes the other ingredients in her juicing recipe. I believe it has to do with the synergistic benefits of all the ingredients combined.
Thanks a million for the information on the benefits of celery juice for weight loss
I can’t wait to try it on my five day juice cleanse
I don’t have a juicer – can I just use my high powered blender instead (which will obviously mean that the fibre is included)
Thanks
My Question exactly
Shelagh and Glenn: Strain well IF no juicer. My recipe is awesome with a juicer BUT must be strained without.
Is celery juice high in oxalates
Nancy — No celery is not considered high oxalate.
I was very concerned about the oxalate value of celery juice as I had been struggling with high oxalates and spent a few years finally getting them to normal levels. Based on the Medical Medium, I drank celery juice every morning for over 4 months and my oxalate symptoms all started coming back and was confirmed by my urine test:(. I was so hopeful as I believe that my oxalate problem was really due to not enough stomach acid and was hopeful celery juice would increase my stomach acid so it could break down the oxalates. I had referred to the oxalate values chart distributed by the Trying Low Oxalates Group and knew that they ranked celery as Very High. However, I tried the celery juice as the only high oxalate food I allowed myself as I thought it would help get to that root cause. I was so bummed it set me back.
Jill, So sorry you have this sensitivity. Juicing should actually reduce the oxalates as they bind to fiber in the veggies. Every morning for 4 months is a lot of exposure. The juice recipe here, even when used in the Radical Metabolism program is only for 25 days.
As we don’t have jicama in our country, could we use a nashi pear as an alternative – or maybe carrot?
One suggestion has been a green apple but apple is already in recipe. Thank you.
I thought fiber also helps regulate blood sugar, so why wouldn’t drinking celery with a little water in a Vitamix be beneficial too?
I would do it that way for reason you stated
Juice, when it is from low sugar fruit and veggies is not a problem for blood sugar regulation. Juice without the fiber lets it go through the digestive system and have a cleansing effect while you are absorbing the minerals and vitamins quickly.
My daughter drank celery juice for almost a year. She thought it would help her autoimmune disease. RESULTS: no change..bloated ness continued, constipation continued..no weight loss even though she was on an autoimmune paleo food plan. She didn’t feel well on celery juice.
Good luck to all.
I don’t have a juicer, only a Vitamix. Can I still make this?
All you have to do is strain it after to remove the fiber. A nut milk bag works very well.
Ann, you mean to use three ribs, right? To me, the stalk implies the entire bunch of ribs growing together on the plant. Thanks.
Kathleen, yes it is three ribs of celery.
Has anyone tried this with benefits? Also, what is effect on blood sugar without the fiber to slow absorption?
Low sugar juice so it is not a problem with blood sugar.
Crazy! The price of celery now !!
I have to watch the amount of Vitamin K in my diet as I take coumadin daily and an overdose of vitamin K disrupts my protime. How much Vitamin K is in your cleanse.
Thank you

Thank you
Martha, the ingredients in this juice do not contain vitamin K.
True that the juice does not contain Vitamin K, however, this juice act anti-inflammatory elements that will impact INR or ProTime. To the ALG TEAM – you need to be careful with responses related to Coumadin as people can bleed out.
This recipe was part of the 4 day detox and was the one thing I looked forward to. It was clean and crisp and I know it will be wonderful in the summer!
Do i strain off the celery after blending?? Lots of fiber i guess!
Yes you strain off the fiber.
I’ve been drinking celery juice according to the MM plan now for 39 days straight, on an empty stomach. I now have issues I could never have imagined including such bad burning with Urination that I’ve never had. My guts are also so inflamed again. If this juice is indeed high in Oxalates, then my misery makes sense. It’s SO sad social media helps charlatans spread their dangerous misinformation. I also encouraged my daughter to drink the celery and it made her so sick too, but she was smart enough to stop drinking it within a week. I’m devastated to have such a setback when I was doing so great and thought celery juice was a harmless addition.
KatB, You are talking about a different plan. You need to apply a little common sense when you do any plan and stop if you have an adverse reaction. The Radical Metabolism Plan from which this was taken is a 21 day plan.
