Can Red Light Therapy Heal Your Heart?

Despite decades of medical advancements, heart disease still claims nearly one-third of all deaths in the U.S.

We’ve waged war on cholesterol, fought the fat battle, cut the carbs, and intensified our exercise—yet heart disease persists. After four decades as the First Lady of Nutrition, I have a pretty good idea of what we’re getting wrong.

For too long, heart disease has been treated with pills and procedures, while natural solutions have often been overlooked. For example, what if one of the most powerful keys to heart health was as simple as the right kind of light?

What Is Red Light Therapy?

One of my favorite ways to relax and recharge is Red Light Therapy (RLT)—a science-backed tool gaining attention for its potential cardiovascular benefits.

Red Light Therapy is exactly what it sounds like—specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared (NIR) light that penetrate deep into your cells, boosting energy production, circulation, and healing at the mitochondrial level. While it’s well known for skin health, pain relief, and muscle recovery, emerging research reveals serious benefits for heart health, too.

How Red Light Therapy Supports Your Heart

So, what can Red Light Therapy actually do for your cardiovascular system? Quite a bit, actually! Here’s what the research—and my own experience—suggests:

  • Boosts Circulation & Oxygenation. Your heart is an oxygen-hungry organ. Studies show that Red Light Therapy increases nitric oxide (NO) production, which relaxes blood vessels and improves circulation. More blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients delivered to your heart, reducing strain and improving overall function.
  • Lowers Inflammation (The Silent Killer): Chronic inflammation is one of the biggest hidden drivers of heart disease. It stiffens arteries, promotes plaque buildup, and leads to silent but deadly damage over time. Red Light Therapy has been shown to lower inflammatory markers, helping to keep your arteries flexible and healthy.
  • Reduces Blood Pressure—Naturally: High blood pressure puts enormous stress on your heart. One study found that just a few minutes of near-infrared light exposure helped lower systolic blood pressure in people with hypertension. Why? It increases blood vessel dilation, making it easier for your heart to pump blood.
  • Supports Heart Muscle Recovery: Your heart is a muscle, and like any muscle, it needs energy to function efficiently. Red Light Therapy stimulates ATP production (your body’s cellular energy currency), helping heart cells repair and regenerate. This is particularly beneficial for people recovering from cardiac events, surgery, or chronic fatigue.

Mitochondrial Power for the Heart

Your heart has more mitochondria than any other organ—because it’s always working, pumping over 100,000 times a day to keep you alive. These tiny powerhouses are responsible for generating the energy (ATP) your heart needs to function efficiently.

But when mitochondria become sluggish—due to aging, stress, or poor circulation—your heart pays the price. This can lead to fatigue, inflammation, and even cardiovascular disease.

Red Light Therapy (RLT) helps recharge mitochondria, stimulating energy production, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting circulation—all critical for keeping your heart beating strong.

How to Use Red Light Therapy for Heart Health

  • Choose the Right Wavelengths: Look for a device that emits 660 nm (red) and 850 nm (near-infrared) wavelengths—these penetrate the deepest and have the most research backing.
  • Target Your Chest Area: Position the light over your heart and upper chest for best results.
  • Use It Consistently: 5-20 minutes per session, 3-5 times per week is ideal.
  • Pair with Magnesium: Magnesium is a heart-healthy mineral that works synergistically with Red Light Therapy for optimal blood vessel relaxation and function. I personally recommend Mag-Key – to relax arterial walls, encourage normal heart rhythm, and lower blood pressure. 400-800 milligrams daily, or 5 milligrams per pound of body weight per day.

Have you tried Red Light Therapy? I’d love to hear your experience in the comments below!

  1. Great article! I totally agree! I love my red light device! Have been using it almost daily since 2019 for my arthritic hips, but it also helps recent neck pain. I heard it helps the thyroid and the eyes, too. I have the Red Rush 360 model from RedTherapy Co. Ari Whitten discusses it in his book on red light therapy.

    1. Hi Marianne! So glad to hear you’re getting great results with your red light therapy—using it consistently since 2019 is impressive! It’s amazing how it can support not just arthritic joints but also other areas like the neck. Have you noticed any improvements beyond pain relief since using your Red Rush 360? – Team ALG
