What every home cook needs to know about Teflon, PFAS, and safer cookware
Most people think the healthiest meal they eat is the one they cook at home. But what if the very pan you’re using is quietly contaminating that meal with microscopic plastic particles? According to emerging research, traditional nonstick cookware may release thousands—even millions—of tiny fragments into your food over time. It’s a hidden source of exposure that deserves a much closer look.
Researchers at Flinders University in Australia found that a single scratch on a Teflon-coated nonstick pan can release approximately 9,100 microplastic particles every time you cook. As the coating continues to wear, that number can climb into the millions—tiny plastic fragments that may end up in the very food you’re serving your family.
The Teflon Warning Just Got Much More Serious

Most of us assumed the real danger began once the coating became scratched or damaged.
But that’s exactly where the latest research changes the story.
Scientists now report that even brand-new, seemingly pristine nonstick pans can release microscopic plastic particles during ordinary cooking. In other words, you don’t have to see scratches or peeling for your cookware to begin contaminating your food.
In a separate study, researchers used a food-like gel to simulate everyday cooking with nonstick cookware. After normal stirring, whisking, heating, and cooling, they found that every traditional nonstick pan they tested released microplastic particles into the simulated food—even when soft utensils were used and no obvious damage was visible.
That means the question is no longer whether an old, scratched pan sheds plastic. The question is whether any traditional nonstick pan can remain completely inert under everyday cooking conditions.
As researchers continue investigating what happens to these particles once they enter the human body, the answers are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
From Your Frying Pan to Your Dinner Plate
As nonstick coatings wear down through normal cooking, microscopic particles can mix with whatever you’re preparing. Because they’re invisible to the naked eye, you would never know they were there. They don’t change the taste of your food. They don’t leave behind a visible residue. Yet researchers say they can become part of the meal itself.
That’s what concerns scientists.
Unlike larger pieces of plastic that are easy to spot, these microscopic fragments are small enough to go unnoticed. Every meal prepared in a deteriorating nonstick pan has the potential to add a little more to your overall exposure.
Of course, your cookware isn’t the only source. Microplastics have also been detected in bottled water, seafood, table salt, food packaging, and even household dust. But unlike many of those exposures, the cookware you use every day is one source you can actually control.
Which raises an even more important question:

Scientists Are Finding Microplastics Throughout the Human Body
For years, many researchers assumed that if microplastics entered the body, they would simply pass through the digestive tract.
That assumption is now being challenged.
In recent years, scientists have detected microplastics in human blood, heart tissue, the placenta, reproductive organs, and even the brain. While researchers are still working to understand the long-term health implications, these discoveries make one thing abundantly clear: these tiny particles aren’t always leaving the body as once believed.
One of the most disturbing studies, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found microplastics embedded in plaque removed from patients’ carotid arteries. Researchers discovered that individuals with plastic particles in these arterial plaques were significantly more likely to experience a heart attack, stroke, or die during the following three years than those without detectable microplastics.
Another recent study (Nature Medicine) reported that microplastics had accumulated in human brain tissue. Researchers also found substantially higher concentrations in brain samples from individuals diagnosed with dementia than in those without the condition. While this study does not prove that microplastics cause dementia, it raises important questions about how these particles may interact with the brain over time.
Taken together, these findings paint a troubling picture. Scientists are increasingly recognizing that microplastic exposure is more than just an environmental issue—it may also be a human health issue.
Which is why reducing unnecessary exposure, whenever possible, simply makes good sense.
Five Simple Ways to Reduce Your Exposure Starting Today
- Rethink Your Cookware. If your nonstick pans are scratched, chipped, or peeling, it’s time to replace them. Better yet, consider switching to cookware made from high-quality stainless steel or ceramic, which avoid the traditional nonstick coatings associated with Teflon and other PFAS-containing surfaces. - Don’t Wait for Visible Damage. One of the biggest takeaways from the latest research is that a pan doesn’t have to look worn out to begin shedding microscopic particles. If you’ve been using the same nonstick cookware for years, it may be worth reassessing what’s in your kitchen before obvious damage appears.
- Store Food in Glass Instead of Plastic. Your frying pan isn’t the only source of microplastics. Whenever possible, store leftovers in glass containers rather than plastic, especially if you’ll be reheating them. Heat can accelerate the breakdown of some plastic materials and increase the likelihood of chemicals migrating into food.
- Filter Your Drinking Water. Microplastics have also been detected in tap water and bottled water. A high-quality water filtration system won’t remove every contaminant, but it can significantly reduce your overall exposure to many unwanted substances, including certain plastic particles and other environmental pollutants.
