6 Essential Ways To Reduce Your EMF Exposure

Summer is a fantastic time to relax, catch up on projects, spend time with family, and enjoy the sunshine. With all of these worthy distractions, it’s easy for us to overlook simple things we need to be doing to protect ourselves from the dangers of EMF radiation.

I want to give clarity and talk about six of the most important topics you need to understand to protect yourself, and your family, from the dangers of EMF radiation, including the impending dangers of 5G.

1. Use Smart Phones Wisely

Today nearly everyone has a smart phone, and for good reason – they provide connectivity and convenience beyond any device we’ve ever had. However, your cell phone is also likely your greatest exposure to EMF radiation, and with its use comes a myriad of negative health effects. Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends you limit your exposure to 0.5 to 2.5mG, but standing three feet from a working microwave exposes you to up to 25mG of EMFs, 10 times the recommendation, and your cell phone emits up to 60 mG of EMFs from its antenna at any given time.

Here are a few great ways to reduce radiation exposure from your cell phone:

  • Put your phone in Airplane mode when you’re not using it (this will virtually eliminate radio frequency radiation)
  • Try not to put your phone up to your ear; when possible, use speakerphone instead.

2. Re-Think WiFi

Take a minute and think about the WiFi in your home. WiFi is a form of radio frequency radiation that is quite dangerous, which is why many countries are banning or limiting its use in schools.

When possible, hardwire internet to your devices. At night, try to remember to turn your WiFi router off. EMF radiation has been shown to dramatically affect our ability to get high quality sleep. One easy way to do this is to buy a simple mechanical outlet timer. You can plug your router into the outlet, and set a time period at night for it to automatically turn off. This will lower your overall exposure to radiation and help you achieve a better night’s sleep.

3. Be Aware, 5G Is On The Way

If you look at the top left or right of your smart phone right now, you’ll probably see something like 3G, 4G, or LTE, etc. Some people mistake these as being the same thing as the 5 Ghz network they might have in their homes, however, they actually just stand for the 3rd and 4th generations of wireless telecommunications.

You may have heard that 5G will be coming soon, but what exactly is 5G, and is it something we need to worry about?

First of all, 5G will be capable of supporting at least 100 billion devices, and be anywhere between 10 and 100 times faster than current cell data networks. With these speeds will come incredibly fast downloads and data transfers, as well as higher productivity.  However, it will be coming at a significant cost to our health, bringing completely unstudied risks.

5G will use a practically untapped bandwidth called Millimeter Waves (or MMW for short). Although millimeter waves offer tons of unique capabilities, especially high transfer rates, they aren’t as robust as current technologies. This means that they are worse at traveling long distances, penetrating buildings, and have even been known to be disrupted by things like rain. To counter these pitfalls, the 5G network infrastructure will require an absolutely enormous number of smaller cell towers and antennas. You’ll likely see far more small cell towers on light poles, street signs, utility poles, homes, businesses, and just about anywhere else they can get away with placing them.

As you may know, when it comes to EMF radiation, distance is one of the best things we can do to protect ourselves. This is due to something called the inverse-square law of physics, which essentially states that as we double our distance from a source of radiation, we quarter our exposure to it. Having a large infrastructure of extremely powerful cell towers and antennas at dramatically closer ranges will likely be extremely dangerous to our health.

Dr. Yael Stein, in a letter he wrote to the FCC, stated that:

“Public exposure to millimeter waves, in the sub-Terahertz frequency range, is currently less common. If these devices fill the public space they will affect everyone, including the more susceptible members of the public: babies, pregnant women, the elderly, the sick and electro hypersensitive individuals.”

In the same letter (which I highly encourage you to read), he stated that the way these millimeter waves will interact with our sweat glands and skin is likely to cause “physical pain” as well as increased risk of certain cancers.

Here is what other experts in the field are saying:

“The new 5G wireless technology involves millimeter waves (extremely high frequencies) producing photons of much greater energy than even 4G and WiFi. Allowing this technology to be used without proving its safety is reckless in the extreme, as the millimeter waves are known to have a profound effect on all parts of the human body.”

So, what can you do to prepare for the dangers that 5G will bring?

First, just gaining a more thorough understanding will help you to identify and understand risks. Next, work to mitigate and reduce your exposure. 4. Evaluate Your Smart Meter

Not everyone has a Smart Meter, and many people are not even aware of what they are. Do you remember when someone from the electrical company would come out to your home to read your electrical meter to get your usage for the month and determine your bill? Smart Meters have now taken their place. These meters are capable of wirelessly transmitting data about your usage to the utility company so they no longer need people to come read the meters. Not only do the meters transmit information to the utility companies, but the utility companies can also control the meters remotely. This allows them to do things like update the firmware of the machine, but it also allows them to turn off your electricity or gas without having to send out an employee.

This gives the utility companies more control while spending less money – but at the expense of our health. You see, these “Smart Meters” emit an enormous amount of EMF radiation whenever they transmit data, which is usually every 15-20 seconds. Since this is radio frequency radiation intended to travel far enough to be reached by a local infrastructure of transmitters, it is also powerful enough to permeate into your home. Peer-reviewed published studies are clear about the adverse biological effects of this sort of pulsed EMF radiation on the body.

So, what can you do about your Smart Meter?

The fight against Smart Meters is still happening, so things are in flux, but currently most states fall under one of two categories when it comes to your rights to not have a smart meter:

  1. You may opt out of having a smart meter, but the utility company is allowed to charge you an additional fee to cover the cost of an employee reading the meter.
  2. You may opt out of having your smart meter, and the utility company cannot charge you additional fees.

You’ll need to look up the laws for your specific state. However, either way, a great place to start is by contacting your utility company and asking them if you currently have a smart meter, and if so, how you can opt out and have an analog meter installed.

If for some reason you are not able to have the meter removed, or you don’t want to hassle with your utility company, Aulterra has a great solution. 5. Make Your Bedroom An EMF-Free Zone

Making sure the room where you sleep is free from the stress of EMF radiation is incredibly important. On top of the biological damage I explained in my post about EMF-Proofing your cell phone and home, EMF radiation also specifically impacts our ability to get restful, REM sleep.

A study from the University of Melbourne found that EMF’s impede our bodies’ ability to produce melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness. Interestingly, this happens because the pineal gland (where our bodies produce melatonin) interprets the electrical nature of EMFs as a source of light and therefore slows melatonin production as it assumes it is still daytime.

There are many reasons we should reduce EMF radiation in our bedroom, so let’s talk about a few simple ways to do just that.

The first thing you need to do is to get your cellphone away from your body. A good solution is to put it on airplane mode, and place it on a desk or dresser that isn’t right next to your bed. This way you can still set an alarm with your phone, but you’ll be lowering your exposure to EMF radiation from your cell phone to almost nothing. An even better solution is to simply turn off your phone at night, and use a basic mechanical alarm clock instead. Not only will this allow you to be significantly more present with yourself, your spouse, and your surroundings, but it will also help you get safer, better quality sleep.

6. Re-evaluate the Electronics in Your Home

When it comes to the dangers of EMF radiation, we often think about the obvious things like cell phones, smart meters, cell towers, microwaves, etc. However, the cumulative exposure from the many electronics we surround ourselves with can actually be quite damaging, from FitBits and Apple watches, to baby monitors and more. These technologies provide incredible convenience, but we should be careful to not be so blinded by the comforts they provide that we don’t even evaluate their dangers.

One simple way you can gain a better understanding of just how much EMF radiation these devices emit is to get an EMF meter. EMF Academy just came out with their annual guide to the best EMF meters that you can check out if your not sure which one is right for you. Use your EMF meter to test all the electronic devices in your home to get a better understanding of even the small devices (like light dimmer switches) that emit radiation.

This is one the biggest reasons I have an Aulterra Whole House Plug in my home, it helps to protect me against all those electronics that we don’t really think about as harmful.

It’s also important to take an honest look at what is in your home. In Marie Kondo’s now well known book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, she famously mentions that if you look at an item in your home and it doesn’t bring you joy, get rid of it. Use this approach to evaluate electronics in your home. If you don’t honestly use it, get something out of it, or derive joy from owning it, then it’s probably not worth the radiation it’s exposing you to.

Final Thoughts and Aulterra Update

Protecting ourselves and our families from the dangers of EMF radiation is an essential part of a holistic approach to wellness. As this topic continues to force it’s way into the public eye, our understanding of just how dangerous EMF radiation is will continue to grow.

    Hello. I follow Dr Klinghardt and Jeromy Johnson of http://www.emfanalysis.com in regards to this subject. They both say that these personal devices are not helpful in mitigating EMF. When I emailed Jeromy about Aulterra this was his response:

    Interesting, I have had almost 100 companies like this either approach me or have clients send me their websites, but this is first I have heard of this one.

    The short answer is that, no, these products are not a good idea.
