I Had an Abscessed Tooth With No Pain—And It Was Affecting More Than My Mouth

I Had An Abscessed Tooth with no pain

Could you have a hidden tooth infection without knowing it?

Most people assume an abscessed tooth comes with severe pain, swelling, or obvious dental symptoms. But sometimes a hidden tooth infection can quietly simmer beneath the surface for months—or even years—without causing the classic warning signs.

I recently learned this lesson firsthand.

One thing I’ve learned after more than four decades in nutrition is this:

Always listen when your body starts whispering.

Because if you don’t?

Eventually it starts shouting.

My Body Was Trying to Tell Me Something

I’ve dealt with TMJ issues ever since a serious fall many years ago. So when I visited my biological dentist recently, I assumed we were simply checking on some lingering jaw problems.

But there was something else going on.

I had been feeling unusually tired and just not quite myself.

So I asked him to take a closer look using Cone Beam Imaging or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), an advanced, 3D imaging technology used widely by dental specialists and oral surgeons.

What showed up on the scan stopped me in my tracks.

Not only was there evidence of a sinus infection, but there was also a hidden tooth abscess that neither of us expected to find.

And here’s the surprising part:

I wasn’t experiencing the classic symptoms most people associate with an abscessed tooth.

No severe tooth pain.

No dramatic swelling.

Nothing that would have sent me rushing to the dentist.

Yet there it was.

The tooth ultimately had to be removed, and I was placed on antibiotics.

But the story doesn’t end there.

As we dug deeper, several other pieces of the puzzle suddenly started making sense.

The elevated liver enzymes were a clue.

And so was an underlying chronic urinary tract infection that I didn’t even realize I had.

My body had been trying to get my attention all along.

Can a Hidden Tooth Infection Affect Your Overall Health?

This is something I’ve been teaching for years.

What happens in the mouth doesn’t stay in the mouth.

Your teeth, gums, jaw, digestive system, immune system, and liver are all part of one interconnected network. When chronic inflammation or infection develops in one area, the effects can sometimes ripple throughout the body.

Research continues to explore the connections between oral health, inflammation, cardiovascular health, immune function, and other systemic concerns.

That’s one reason I’m such a believer in biological dentistry and comprehensive dental evaluations.

Sometimes the source of a health problem isn’t where the symptom appears.

Signs of a Hidden Tooth Abscess

One reason hidden dental infections can be difficult to identify is that symptoms aren’t always obvious.

While some people experience severe tooth pain, others may notice more subtle signs such as:

  • Chronic jaw discomfort
  • TMJ flare-ups
  • Persistent inflammation
  • Recurrent infections
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained health changes
  • Elevated inflammatory markers
  • No symptoms at all

In my case, there was no dramatic dental pain to point me in the right direction.

That’s what made the discovery so surprising.

Can a Tooth Infection Affect the Liver?

It absolutely can. In my case, one of the biggest clues came after extensive blood work revealed elevated liver enzymes.

And whenever I see elevated liver enzymes, I immediately start asking questions.

The liver is your primary filtration and detoxification organ. It helps process toxins, metabolize hormones, support digestion, and regulate inflammatory responses throughout the body.

When the body is dealing with chronic inflammation, infection, medications, or antibiotics, the liver often ends up carrying a heavier burden.

Again, I can’t say with certainty that the hidden dental infection caused my elevated liver enzymes.

But I can say that once the infection was discovered, several seemingly unrelated health clues suddenly looked very different.

That’s why it’s so important to investigate underlying causes rather than simply chasing symptoms.

Why Biological Dentistry Matters

Traditional dentistry plays an important role in maintaining oral health, but biological dentistry takes a broader view.

Biological dentists recognize that the mouth is not separate from the rest of the body. They often use advanced imaging and comprehensive evaluations to look for hidden infections, cavitations, chronic inflammation, and other issues that may be overlooked during routine exams.

In my case, a simple panoramic scan revealed something I never suspected.

Had I not gone in for that appointment, the infection might have remained hidden much longer.

Why I Immediately Turned to Liver Support

Any time the body has been dealing with chronic inflammation, infection, medications, or antibiotics, I start thinking about liver support.

That’s why I immediately reached for two of my favorite formulas: Bile Builder and Liver-Lovin’ Formula.

Bile Builder supports healthy bile production and flow—an often-overlooked aspect of detoxification, digestion, and waste elimination. Without adequate bile, the body cannot efficiently process and eliminate what it needs to remove.

Liver-Lovin’ Formula provides targeted nutritional support designed to nourish healthy liver function and help support one of the hardest-working organs in the body.

I also increased my intake of Vitality C—taking five scoops daily to support healthy drainage pathways, provide antioxidant protection, and help my body bounce back from both the infection and the additional stress of diagnostic imaging.

After everything my body had been through, I wanted to give my liver and immune system every advantage possible.

The Bigger Lesson

What I find most fascinating is that my body knew something was wrong before I did.

The elevated liver enzymes were a clue.

The recurring urinary tract infections were a clue.

The body was sending signals.

I just didn’t yet know how all the pieces fit together.

That’s why I always encourage people to stay curious about their symptoms.

Don’t ignore the whispers.

Ask questions.

Look deeper.

Because sometimes the real problem isn’t where you think it is.

And sometimes a hidden tooth can end up teaching you a very important lesson about the entire body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have an abscessed tooth without pain?

Yes. While many tooth abscesses cause pain, some hidden dental infections produce few or no obvious symptoms, making routine dental evaluations especially important.

What are the symptoms of a hidden tooth infection?

Symptoms can include jaw discomfort, chronic inflammation, fatigue, recurring infections, TMJ symptoms, or sometimes no symptoms at all.

Can a tooth infection affect other parts of the body?

Oral health is closely connected to overall health. Researchers continue to study how chronic dental infections and inflammation may influence other systems throughout the body.

What is biological dentistry?

Biological dentistry takes a whole-body approach to oral health, recognizing the connection between dental health and overall wellness.

Why support the liver after antibiotics?

Antibiotics, infections, and inflammatory stress can place additional demands on the liver. Supporting healthy liver function may help promote overall wellness and recovery.

  1. Great info thank you! What are the liver markers you are referring to that were high? I have had low white blood cell count for several years with no symptoms. Just wondering what to look for on my blood test? Thank you!

    1. Joanna, thank you for your question. One thing to look for is elevated liver enzymes, which can sometimes be a clue that something deeper may be going on. Hope that helps! – Team ALG

  2. I am a retired dental hygienist. I used to teach people about total body health including oral health. There is an association I get emails from routinely. It is American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH).

  3. How did you treat the infection? I currently have one but I don’t want a root canal so I’ve done nothing for almost a year 🙁

    1. RJ, so sorry you’re dealing with this. In my case, the tooth ultimately had to be removed, and I was placed on antibiotics. To support my recovery, I turned to UNI KEY’s Bile Builder and Liver-Lovin’ Formula to help support healthy liver function and detoxification, while increasing my intake of UNI KEY’s Vitality C to five scoops daily for additional antioxidant and immune support. – Team ALG

  5. Would like to know what you are going to do to replace your pulled tooth? I’m researching implants & would like your opinion about them.

    1. Rebecca, in my case, I did not get a dental implant. After the tooth was removed, I chose a bridge with a composite (artificial) tooth instead. Every situation is different, so it’s important to discuss the pros and cons of implants, bridges, and other options with a knowledgeable dentist who can evaluate your individual needs – Team ALG

  6. That’s why I go through thermography test every year. it shows all these points of inflammation before any other tests do. Biodentistry is using it a lot

    1. Yunona, that’s interesting. Early detection of inflammation is so important, and many people find thermography to be a useful complementary tool. I’m glad you’ve found an approach that helps you stay proactive about your health – Team ALG
