Key Points
- Thinning hair is often a downstream sign of poor digestion and nutrient absorption, not just genetics or hormones.
- Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) prevents the breakdown of protein and the absorption of minerals (iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium) and B vitamins needed for healthy hair and collagen.
- Common clues include bloating right after meals, brittle nails, leg cramps, fatigue, and undigested food in the stool.
- A simple at-home acid test and targeted support (apple cider vinegar plus HCl+2) can help restore acid levels and support new growth.
- In my practice, clients who address stomach acid often see improvements in hair, energy, and digestion within weeks to a few months.
- Always rule out ulcers or other contraindications before adding acid support.
Carla came to me at 32 after months of watching her once-thick hair thin in the shower drain and on her brush. She had already tried the dermatologist’s creams and shampoos with no change. What stood out to me wasn’t just the hair loss—it was the combination of brittle nails, occasional leg cramps, and that tight, bloated feeling she got right after eating. She had also gone through a period of intense stress right before the shedding started. In over four decades of clinical work, that pattern has shown me time and again that the real issue often begins higher up in the digestive tract than most people look.
Hair loss affects at least half of all men and more than a quarter of women. While genetics and hormones play a role, I have found that digestive function—specifically adequate stomach acid—is one of the most overlooked and reversible factors. When clients come to me with unexplained shedding, my first questions are about digestion and nutrient absorption. As I have said for years, “You are not what you eat. You are what you absorb.”
Why Stomach Acid Matters More Than Most People Realize
Millions of people take acid-reducing medications (prescription or over-the-counter) while popular wellness advice pushes the idea that the body should be alkaline. The truth is that your stomach is designed to be highly acidic. Ideal stomach pH is around 2. Hydrochloric acid is one of the strongest acids in nature. It is your first line of defense against bacteria and parasites that enter with food. It activates pepsin so protein can be broken down into amino acids, and it signals the pancreas to release the enzymes needed for further digestion and absorption.
Without enough acid, you cannot properly absorb iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium, calcium, or key B vitamins such as B12 and folate. Protein is not fully broken down into the amino acids required for DNA repair and collagen formation. Collagen is the structural protein your hair follicles rely on. Over time, the result can be thinning hair, brittle nails, muscle loss, and a higher risk of nutrient-related issues. In my experience working with clients since the 1970s, restoring acid levels has frequently been the missing piece that allowed hair to start regrowing.
Do You Have Low Stomach Acid? Take This Quick Quiz
Give yourself one point for each statement that is true for you:
- I have belching, bloating, or acid reflux right after eating.
- I have constipation.
- I have food allergies or sensitivities.
- I have hair loss.
- I have leg or foot cramps.
- I have gallstones or have had my gallbladder removed.
- I have acne, rosacea, eczema, or chronic hives.
- I have mineral deficiencies (iron, calcium, or magnesium).
- I am deficient in vitamin B12 or have pernicious anemia.
- My fingernails break easily or have vertical ridges.
- I am losing muscle mass.
- I have low bone density or osteoporosis.
- I have an autoimmune condition.
- I have cognitive problems or memory issues.
- I have SIBO, chronic intestinal infections, Candida, or parasites.
- I see undigested food in my bowel movements.
- I have “leaky gut.”
- I have tested as having low stomach acid or have been on proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for more than two months.
- I have had weight-loss surgery.
- I struggle with fatigue.
If you scored more than three points, you are at elevated risk for low stomach acid. (Do not proceed with acid supplementation if you have peptic ulcer disease.)
A Simple At-Home Acid Test
Purchase a bottle of HCl+2 from UNI KEY Health. Take one capsule before a larger meal that contains both fat and protein. If your stomach acid is already adequate, you will usually feel a warm or burning sensation (similar to mild heartburn). If you feel nothing, your body can likely benefit from additional acid support.
Practical Steps to Support Healthy Stomach Acid
The stomach responds relatively quickly to consistent signals. Start with one teaspoon of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in a little water each morning before breakfast. This helps lower the pH and “wake up” digestion.
Next, if you do not have peptic ulcer disease, take HCl+2 with meals that contain fat and protein (ideally before or as soon as you begin eating). If one capsule produces no warmth, increase to two capsules the next day. Continue increasing by one capsule every couple of days until you feel mild warmth or burning, then drop back by one capsule. That is your working dose. As your own acid production improves, you can usually reduce the amount over time. Some older adults or people who have had gastric surgery may need ongoing support at a lower dose.
If you are over 65, have had gastric surgery, or have peptic ulcer disease, pancreatic enzyme support is especially helpful. I recommend Digesta-Key taken with meals. (If you also deal with joint discomfort or autoimmune issues, the enzymes can be taken between meals for their systemic benefits—unless you have active ulcers.)
Carla followed a similar protocol. Within a few months she reported less bloating, stronger nails, and visible new hair growth along her part and hairline. Results vary, but the pattern is consistent in the clients I have worked with: when digestion and absorption improve, the hair often follows.
Addressing stomach acid is not a quick cosmetic fix, but for many people it removes a major barrier to the nutrients the hair follicles actually need. If the quiz or test resonates, start with the foundational steps above and consult your healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement, especially if you take medications or have existing digestive conditions.

Inf-Zyme is a good formula to help with digestion if you have a thin stomach lining.
What if hcl also causes a reaction of increased sinus and inflammation. Water on its own also causes problems, but lemon water is usually OK. I was told I have leaky gut. With other symptoms how do I stop reacting to even start the healing gut process? 🥺😭😱
Thank you for your question. When dealing with leaky gut and sensitivities like sinus inflammation, a gentle, step-by-step approach is essential. Since lemon water is tolerable for you, stick with it to support pH balance. UNI KEY’s HCl+2 may be helpful, as it’s designed for individuals with sensitivities, combining betaine HCl with soothing digestive aids to minimize discomfort. Adding Flora-Key probiotics can help rebalance your gut microbiome, while Liver-Lovin’ Formula supports detox pathways and reduces inflammation. Take it slow, listen to your body, and consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance. Let us know if you have any more questions! – Team ALG
I’ve had gastric bypass surgery and now have a very thin stomach lining. I can’t take anything acidic.
I haven’t had surgery but struggle drinking anything. 😔
Thank you for sharing. If drinking liquids is a struggle, try small sips of room-temperature herbal teas or diluted lemon water, as they may be gentler. Adding Flora-Key probiotics and Liver-Lovin’ Formula could also help support your digestion and gut health. Let us know how this works for you – Team ALG
