Lately I’ve been waking up around 3am, then I can’t drift off again. I’ve tried relaxation exercises, warm milk and melatonin, but nothing has helped. I have headaches, too—maybe because I’m so exhausted. What do you suggest?
In my clinical experience, one out of three women who toss and turn at night suffers from overly acidic systems. This pH imbalance seems to disrupt bodily functions that are necessary for restful sleep. Other red flags of an imbalance include fatigue, headaches, gastric reflux and indigestion.
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to restore pH balance: Stir ¼ tsp. of baking soda into 4 oz of water and sip before bed. This alkaline solution neutralizes acidic compounds in the blood. I also advise cutting back on acid-forming foods (like meat, sugar and refined flour) in the evenings to prevent acid buildup at night. Once you’re sleeping soundly you can stop drinking the solution, but keep limiting acidic foods to avoid recurrence.
