Not All in Your Head, Dangers Lurking in Your Mouth

sesame_oilCleanse and Detox “Hidden” Bacteria in Your Gums and Teeth to Protect Health.

Microorganisms lodged in your mouth can impact virtually every part of your body. Even with a pearly white smile and pink, healthy-looking gums, you may still have a massive infection under a crown or in an empty space where a tooth was pulled. I know this all too well from personal experience.

Because your mouth is literally the gateway to your entire digestive system, it’s not surprising that oral health and overall health are closely linked. Recent research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, emphysema, hepatitis C, obesity, and stroke are all linked to gum and dental problems.

Since more than 15% of people in western industrialized countries have periodontal disease, that doesn’t bode well for long-term health. And many of dentistry’s responses to oral health problems only make things worse.

“How many people know the consequences of housing the 40 anaerobic bacteria in implants, the 60 in root canals, or the 8 in cavitations (holes in the jawbone from pulled teeth,” says biological dentist extraordinaire Hal Huggins, DDS. He believes that root canals alone—of which there may be 50 million a year—are related to breast cancer, leukemia, and MS.

A Different Take on Teeth
That’s not all. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), each tooth corresponds to different organs in the body in an integrative mind-body system. For instance, your front teeth (called central incisors) relate to the bladder and kidneys. Canine or eye teeth correspond to the liver and gallbladder.

As the chart in Fat Flush For Life, The Year-Round Super Detox Plan to Boost Your Metabolism and Keep the Weight Off shows, the teeth-organ meridians in TCM impact the autonomic nervous system as well as emotions. Because the Chinese believe that each season of the year activates certain organs, Fat Flush for Life taps into nature’s harmonious cycles, modifying detox protocols for optimal wellness.

In winter when the adrenals and kidneys need extra tender loving care, I’ve designed a detox plan using warming foods (like Spiced Lemon Toddy) to support your body’s special needs this time of year. Seasonal detox is just one way to eliminate toxins that zap overall wellness. It’s also important to clean up and detoxify the “hidden” microbes in your mouth.

Oil Pulling Kills Bacteria
An Ayurvedic technique recently found effective in a 2007 study from the Journal of Oral Health and Community Dentistry, oil pulling utilizes dietary oils from Winter Fat Flush (coconut or sesame oil) to pull bacteria, mucus, and toxins out of the mouth. “When you put oil in your mouth, the fatty membranes of the microorganisms are attracted to it,” says Bruce Fife, ND.

As you swish the oil around your teeth and gums, microbes are pulled out as though they are being drawn to a powerful magnet. “Bacteria hiding under crevices in the gums and in pores and tubules within the teeth are sucked out of their hiding places,” he adds, with dangerous microbes held firmly in the oil.

“The longer you push and pull the oil through your mouth, the more microbes are pulled free,” Dr. Fife explains. Aim for 20 minutes, then spit out this oil-pulling solution to get rid of bacteria, viruses, and other organisms. If you need to spit out intermittently, make sure you put more oil back in your mouth to continue this process. Spit it all out, and then rinse with a large glass of water to remove any residues.

Effective against the germs that cause plaque (killing up to 30%) and a simple and effective way to treat gingivitis (reducing gum disease between 52 and 60%), oil pulling beats out mouthwash, which cuts gingivitis only 13% and plaque up to 26%. While I don’t advise giving up brushing your teeth, oil pulling eliminates more bacteria than that does, too!

As Fat Flush for Life shows, even gentle winter detox can help lower your body burden of toxins. Many of these toxins contribute to weight gain. But without careful, seasonal cleansing, weight loss diets only release these environmental poisons from stored fat—putting them back in circulation where they can undermine your health.
