Beat Those Blood Sugar Blues

7 Sugar-Busting Nutrients.

bloodsugarFrom leftover Halloween treats right through to New Year’s party fare, it’s easy to overindulge this time of year. But who needs the extra—and nutrient empty—calories?

If Americans knew all the dangers of sugar, it would be withdrawn from our list of safe food additives. Known to suppress the immune system and feed cancer cells, sugar and foods containing this sweetener quickly raise blood sugar (glucose) levels, providing a quick “high” followed by an equally rapid crash.

Sugary drinks and foods lead to belly fat, implicated in heart disease, and lower insulin sensitivity, increasing the risk of diabetes. Sugar and simple carbohydrates also contribute to aging, brain fog, dementia, learning problems, and tooth decay.

It’s no surprise that obesity has become a national epidemic at the same time that U.S. dependence on sweeteners has increased. Americans consume five and half times more sugar than the French.

Increasingly used in processed foods and soft drinks, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is broken down in the liver and turned directly into fat. Consumption of HFCS jumped from 19 pounds per capita in 1980 to 63.8 pounds per person in 2000.

Dr. Ann Louise’s Take:

Sugar and even eating too many simple carbs act more like drugs that our bodies must detoxify rather than food. Believe it or not, you can satisfy a sweet tooth with fiber-rich fall veggies.

Even though a sweet potato contains 15 grams of natural sugar, it won’t spike blood glucose, only to have to you crash afterward—as long as you eat it as part of a meal. This is only one vegetable that offers plenty of fiber to help you feel full—not to mention lots of important nutrients.

By contrast, refined sugar offers only “empty” calories. Refining strips away critical minerals—chromium, cobalt, copper, magnesium, manganese, and zinc.

A healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight loss can reduce the incidence for Type 2 diabetes by over 50 percent. Simple lifestyle changes have been found more effective than the diabetes drug metformin—without adverse effects like diarrhea, gas, headaches, indigestion, nausea or vomiting.

In addition to sampling fall’s bountiful harvest, anyone who’s been eating sugary foods needs to supplement the diet with sugar-busting nutrients. Here are seven nutrients I recommend to anyone fighting the blood sugar blues:

1. Chromium (200 to 600 mcg a day) to prevent glucose intolerance, fatigue, and belly fat (linked to heart disease), available in Uni Key’s Weight Loss Formula.

2. Manganese (10 to 30 mg a day) to support mitochrondria (the energy supply in each cell) and balance mineral levels in the body.

3. L-glutamine (500 mg 3 times a day) to reduce sugar cravings, metabolize fat, and assist in the production of insulin.

4. B complex vitamins (50 mg a day) to effectively convert starches to sugar.

5. Pantothenic acid (500 mg a day) for carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

6. Vitamin C (3,000 mg) to prevent cell death and speed wound healing, a serious concern for anyone with insulin problems like diabetes.

7. Zinc (up to 50 mg once per day) to fight dangerous free radicals, infections, and speed wound healing.

The FF Kit is designed with many of the nutrients mentioned above in a way that does stabilize blood sugar, help metabolize fat and cleanse the liver.

Please explain requirement No. 7 for 500 mg. of zinc three times a day. I thought the minimum daily requirement for zinc is only 11 mg. Thanks.

We apologize for the error. Dr. Ann Louise recommends up to 50 mg per day of Zinc. The article has now been updated to reflect the correct dosage.

    Thanks for the catch!

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to send an email alert correcting this error in case someone read it and decided to try it without looking back at this page again? Couldn’t it be very dangerous?

I do appreciate the information, but can anyone explain how the information in the referenced sources leads to the general statements and recommendations in this blog?

Want to comment on Robert’s post.
I read a myriad of nutritional blogs daily. None of the experts reference ALL the sources they use or the referece links would be longer than the blog.
The reason I am such a fan of Ann Louise’s blog,is that unlike so many of the others, her comments are based on over thirty years of experience or empirical evidence. Check out her bio on her site.

    Dear Friends:
I would love to answer each and every single one of your queries, as I have done to the best of my ability, in the past. The popularity of this Blog has grown to the extent that I can no longer provide that service but I am in the planning stages of an Internet – TV show where you can call in and get those questions answered by me in person! Please stay tuned for this exciting development. I first must complete a new manuscript and then will make some exciting announcements. In the interim, may I suggest that if you have questions about products, call UNI KEY at 1-800-888-4353. The folks there are helpful and will direct you accordingly. If you are concerned about a particular health condition, then by all means check out the Testing Kits on my site which will help you to determine underlying causes. Please don’t let this dissuade you from posting. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and interest!

P.S. The Weight Loss Formula (part of Fat Flush Kit) contains many of the ingredients referenced above, with the exception of the l-glutamine which must be taken separately before or between meals. I come from a long line of diabetics and designed the Weight Loss Formula with type 2 diabetics in mind.

I just wrote on a site, but that one was talking about natural stress reducers. I am not sure if this is a different, but hope I can find it again.
I was wondering if anyone has been sucessful with not having fish on the program. I have bought all kinds, but it sits in the freezer, until I throw it away. I just do not like fixing fish, let alone the taste.
Also, can you be on this when you work and can’t go on potty breaks?
I don’t enjoy cooking much, so wondered if there was hope for me. I did try Fat Flush years ago, but need to try it again. It makes sence to me, but seems hard.
I would love to know how people stay on this for years. I do love sweets, though can leave them alone if I get completely off them. Then we are invited out to play cards and there are all kinds of junk food and I back, addicted again. I don’t know if there is any help for me.
    Thanks!

    Hi ALG—

I wonder what you think of Diane Kress book THE METABOLISM MIRACLE? I read of it in FIRST magazine and have bought the book. I have lost 30# this year and become very healthy but still have a roll of fat around my middle. She addresses this in her book and it makes sense to me.

    Thanks for all your wisdom.

Cathy- I think Ann Louise would agree that there are many good books out there on nutrition–and getting control of blood sugar is paramount. Ann louise’s books the Fat Flush Plan and the Fast Tracked Detox Program both focus on this, and have been used very successfully to burn belly fat off and keep it off.

    Ann,

How can I contact you? I love your work, especially on sugars. So many don’t realize the complications of sweeteners such as agave. I would like to send you a bottle of an organic date syrup to try that is similar to date sugar in the way that it retains the awesome nutritional value of the date and is amazing in cooking and baking. It’s a wonder and I think you would love it.

Hi. I needed to drop you a quick note to express my thanks. Ive been following your blog for a month or so and have picked up a lot of good information and enjoyed the way youve structured your site. I’m attempting to run my ownblog however I suppose its too general and I wish to focus on additional smaller topics. Being all things to any or all folks is not all that its cracked up to be.
