Your heart doesn’t take a day off

From the moment you took your first breath, it’s been beating around the clock—over 100,000 times a day—quietly keeping you alive. Most of us don’t give it a second thought… until something goes wrong. And when heart disease shows up, it can stop us in our tracks—with no warning at all.

And believe me, it can. Heart disease is still the number one killer in America, and that needs to change. After all the cholesterol meds and so-called “heart-healthy” guidelines, we should be doing better. So why aren’t we?

I think it’s because we’ve been looking in the wrong places.

Your heart needs more than good intentions. It needs real support—and a fresh look at the surprising places heart health truly begins. Let’s dive into the latest breakthroughs—and what they mean for your heart.

1. Your Gut Is Talking to Your Heart (Yes, Really)

We’ve known for years that gut health is the cornerstone of overall wellness, but now we’re seeing just how deep the connection runs—right to your cardiovascular system. A balanced microbiome plays a key role in keeping blood pressure in check and calming inflammation, both of which are major players in heart disease. Learn more about the importance of good gut health in my interview with the author of Is Your Cardiologist Killing You?, Dr. Sherry Rogers: The Gut Connection for Supernatural Health.

2. Don’t Underestimate a Good Brisk Walk

A new study out of the UK Biobank found something fascinating: people who walked at a brisk pace had up to a 43% lower risk of developing arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (A-fib). That’s huge. And it means that you don’t have to train for marathons, just focus on consistency and pace. So lace up those sneakers and get your heart pumping—your rhythm depends on it.

3. Vitamin D: It Starts in Childhood

Most people don’t think of heart disease as a “childhood” concern—but low vitamin D in kids may double their risk of developing heart disease later in life. That’s the word from a Finnish study that tracked participants into adulthood. If you’ve got little ones in your life, make sure they’re getting enough D—through sunshine, high-quality supplements, or both. It’s one of the simplest things you can do with a lifetime of benefits.

4. A Toast to Your Heart? Don’t Be So Quick to Dismiss Bubbles

This one might raise some eyebrows, but I’m always open to fresh findings. A recent Canadian study found that moderate champagne and white wine consumption was linked to a lower risk of sudden cardiac arrest. No, this doesn’t give you permission to pop a bottle nightly—but it does challenge the notion that only red wine is “heart healthy.” The real takeaway? Pleasure, moderation, and a positive outlook matter.

5. A Better Blood Test—Years Ahead of Its Time

I’ve said for decades that we need better ways to predict and prevent heart disease. Now researchers are saying that a new blood test combo—LDL, CRP, and lipoprotein(a)—can predict heart attack and stroke risk up to 30 years in advance. Imagine that! The earlier we catch subtle imbalances, the more we can do to turn things around naturally—before prescriptions and procedures take over.

6. The Two Nutrients I Never Ignore: Magnesium and CoQ10

When it comes to heart health, magnesium and CoQ10 are two that I consider non-negotiable.

· Magnesium helps keep your heartbeat steady, relaxes tight blood vessels, and supports healthy blood pressure. Without enough magnesium, your heart has to work harder—and so do you. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve worked with who felt more calm, more energized, and slept better just by adding in the right form of magnesium. That’s exactly why we created Mag-Key—it’s a gentle blend of four well-absorbed forms that won’t upset your stomach like some others do.

· Your heart uses more energy than just about any other organ in the body, and CoQ10 is what helps keep it going strong. If you’ve noticed your energy isn’t what it used to be—or if you’re on a statin drug—this is one nutrient you don’t want to skip. Statins are known to deplete CoQ10, and that’s something I wish more doctors would mention.

I’ve been recommending these two nutrients for decades because they work. They support your heart at the cellular level, where real change begins.

Final Thoughts

We are not powerless when it comes to our hearts. The science may be evolving, but my message remains the same: nourish your body, support your detox pathways, and take care of your emotional health. The heart isn’t just a muscle—it’s a messenger, a monitor, and a mirror of how we’re living.
