Can Grass-Fed Beef Help Me Lose Weight?

When the news about pink slime came out, my friend switched to grass-fed beef. She wasn’t even trying to lose weight but ended up losing 38 pounds without making any other changes to her diet. I’d like to try it, but grass-fed beef is a big pricey. Is it worth the splurge?

In my opinion, the extra cost is worth it. Research shows grass-fed beef has 40 percent less saturated fat and 100 fewer calories per serving than grain-fed livestock—plus twice as many heart-healthy omega-3s and 500 percent more metabolism-revving conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). That difference can add up to major weight loss: One study found that women who ate CLA-rich foods lost 9 percent more body fat and reduced levels of hunger hormones by 35 percent compared with people who didn’t get CLA.

For best results, eat three 4-oz servings of grass-fed beef per week. Many of my clients who do so in conjunction with a healthy diet lose 3 to 5 pounds each week.
